Penglai Waterfall

Penglai Waterfall is part of the Shibi Valley in Yunlin County.  Starting at Penglai Waterfall hikers are able to walk up to the top of the waterfall and then all the way up the creek (5-6 kms estimate) past Lianxintang Waterfall.  We didn’t have time to do the full hike but it is likely beautiful.  It is kind of demoralizing to a hiker that a road also goes all the way to the top and crosses the trail in several places.  It is on my to do list but it isn’t very high because of this.

One interesting site at Penglai Waterfall is the old infrastructure for a cable car that went to the top of the waterfall.  It looks like it used to be a very popular place but the 921 earthquake (9/21/1999) destroyed the cable car system and it was never repaired.

Rating and length – easy – <2km (1 hour) round trip

How to get there – Take Hwy 149甲 to Caoling in Yunlin County.  Once in Caoling take a left and follow the signs to Penglai Waterfall.  There is a parking lot next to a restaurant.

The hike – Walk through the restaurant and then past the bathrooms.  The trail splits as you get near the waterfall.  The left branch goes straight to the waterfall and the right branch takes you closer to the valley where you can see some smaller waterfalls. The signs direct you to the right but if it is wet it might be better to stay on the left branch due to slippery rocks.  We found the trail to the top pretty easily but it was overgrown and we didn’t have time to hike it.  I have no idea what kind of shape the trail is in.

Seasonality – I have been there 5 times and it is usually dry so I would recommend visiting this one during summer, early fall or after a moderately heavy rain
