Xiao Wulai is one of northern Taiwan’s big waterfalls. The trail system was heavily damaged a few years ago but it’s been rebuilt. Unfortunately they haven’t built facilities (especially parking) to match the weekend tourist numbers.
The hike – Xiao Wulai is viewable from an observation deck near the main entrance. There are two options to hike down to the falls. The first is to leave from the observation deck and take a nice trail all the way down to the bottom. It’s a long way down but it’s a well graded trail. The second option is to drive down to the inadequate parking area. From the parking area there is a trail with a short branch to Double Dragon Waterfall. The main trail connects to the Sky View Trail and signs direct you to the falls base. This trail is very steep. The two trails connect and the fit can hike for an afternoon at Xiao Wulai.
How to get there – Xiao Wulai is located in Hsinchu county near Hwy 7. It could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to get there from the exit on the 3 freeway. There will be plenty of signs to Xiao Wulai. It will be difficult to park if you go on a weekend. There is also a bus (#5105) from Daxi to Xiao Wulai.
