Yinhedong Waterfall

Yinhedong Waterfall in Taiwan is one of just a few waterfalls immediately next to a temple. It is an easy hike from Maokong Gondola.

Yinhedong (commonly translated as Silver Stream Cave Waterfall and Temple). It is one of only a few waterfalls in Taiwan that is built immediately next to a temple. You are also able to walk behind the waterfall to a small shrine. The end of the hike is at Maokong Gondola where you can enjoy tea with a great view of Taipei.

Rating and length – easy – 2.5 km (one way) (1-1.5 hours)

Accessibility – public transit or taxis are the best option – car parking is unknown at the Yinhe Trailhead

How to get there – The preferred direction of the hike is from Yinhe Road to Maokong Gondola. The best option is to take a taxi (180 TWD) to the trailhead from Xindian MRT Station. Most taxi drivers should understand Yinhedong Pubu. It is possible to take a bus from Xindian but it would require a 20-30 minute uphill road walk to the trailhead. It is also possible to ride your scooter but then you can’t finish your hike at Maokong Gondola without hiking back to your scooter. Car parking looks scarce (not impossible) along the narrow Yinhe Road.

The hike – There are two reasons that I recommend starting at the Yinhe Rd Trailhead. The first is that your transportation options are limited at the Yinhe Trailhead. You can either call a taxi or roadwalk 20 minutes downhill to a bus stop The other is that I really dislike walking down steep slippery steps. Unfortunately this means that you will need to walk up a lot of stairs to reach the temple. It will only take 15 minutes to walk up to the temple or you can stop at a couple of places along the way and swim in a small pool. The temple is quite small but there are some tables to rest at outside and a path leads behind the temple to a small shrine. Take the other trail to continue to Maokong Gondola. The path is well signed and in great shape.

Seasonality – You probably need to come within 2-3 weeks after a heavy rain to see a nice waterfall.

Costs – A taxi to Yinhe Trailhead is 180 TWD. The Maokong Gondola ride (one way to Taipei Zoo MRT is 120 TWD). Maokong Gondola info
