Nenggao Waterfall

Nenggao Waterfall (能高瀑布)

Nenggao Waterfall is stunning by itself dropping 200 meters in 3 tiers but it is far from the best part of hiking the Nenggao trail. The waterfall is located near Tianchi Cabin on the Nenggao trail and some of the best mountain hiking trails in Taiwan are accessible nearby.  Several of Taiwan’s top 100 mountains can be hiked as daytrips from Tianchi Cabin.

The hike – It’s a fairly easy 13km hike to Tianchi cabin. Stay on the main trail the entire way and the waterfall is located 0.5km before the cabin. It is viewable from a small bridge and there is a short side trail to the base of the waterfall.

How to get there – Take Hwy 14 east from Puli towards Hehuanshan. In Wushe (last 7-11) turn on Hwy 14 (not Hwy 14甲) and go through Lushan. In Lushan you will need to apply for a police mountain permit. Follow the road to the end. Parking could be difficult but there should be a spot next to the road near the trailhead.

Other info – Stu’s linked blog contains more info on the mountain permit process. The Tianchi cabin must be booked in advance but camping is also possible (it gets crowded on a weekend). Meal service is also available at the cabin. It’s possible to set this all up by yourself or to go with one of the hiking guide groups in Taiwan. I went with Taiwan Adventures.
