We planned to visit nearby Sipisopiso Waterfall from Tongging but we were very surprised when our guesthouse (Wisma Sibayak Tongging) told us about Sidompak Waterfall. The creek for the waterfall actually flows through the guesthouse property before emptying into Lake Toba. They were able to set us up with a local guide (absolutely necessary) and the hike up to the waterfall is an adventure (lack of a trail).
Rating and length – moderately strenuous – 6kms (3+ hours) round trip
Accessibility – this is a really challenging hike that you requires hikers to go cross country without a trail and then walk up the creek.
How to get there – Tongging is located about 1.5 hours from Berastagi at the far northwestern end of Lake Toba. The hike is just south of the town near the two guesthouses.
The hike – Turn west on the 1st small road (a small christian shrine is opposite the turn) and walk up this road. Soon you come to another small shrine and turn right down a small path. At this point you will be able to see the upper tier of the waterfall at the end of the valley. This path leads to a large farm and your guide will lead you to the trail on the other side of the farm. The trail leads to a creek crossing. For 10-15 minutes you are able to hike off trail before returning to the creek and following the creek upstream to the lower waterfall. You won’t be able to see or hike to the upper tier. There is nothing that resembles a trail and it requires hikers to be in the water stepping for slippery rock to slippery rock.
Recommended gear – water shoes and a dry bag for your camera and valuables
Entrance cost – free but local guide recommended
