Pura Gunung Kawi is a unique temple in Bali. Most temples construct massive structures and towers out of stone but they carved massive reliefs out of rock. Overall there are 10 reliefs that were constructed almost 1000 years ago.
How to get there – It is about a 20 minute drive northeast of Ubud. Pura Tirta Empul is very close and can be easily combined in a daytrip.
What to see – It will take about 15 minutes to walk down to the temple. It is all stairs but there are great views on the way down. At the entrance to the temple you are expected to sprinkle yourself with holy water. Turning left takes you to 4 of the reliefs and going right takes you across the creek to 5 more reliefs. There is one additional relief separate from the others to see. There will likely be small offerings placed in several places.
