Caihong Waterfall

Caihong (Rainbow) Waterfall is a nice waterfall in a very remote part of Hualien. The road progressively becomes worse and worse but the valley is beautiful and less traveled. Even if you didn’t want to drive your car the last 2-3 km in the car it would be a wonderful walk next to the river.

How to get there – Caihong Waterfall is located near Chinan Recreational Area and Liyutan (Carp Pond) 23 km from Hualien Train Station. Go past Liyutan on highway 9丙 and turn at the sign for Chinan Recreational Area. Instead of entering Chinan Recreational Area turn right and continue up the valley. We passed by several small waterwheels that we hadn’t seen elsewhere in Taiwan. The road becomes progressively worse as you drive up the valley but in particular there is one bridge (Jan 2017) that was in bad shape. Drive as far as you feel confident in your vehicle. Motorcycles and scooters won’t have any problems.

Mass transit – Bus 1139A drops you off at Liyutan (Tan Nan Recreation Area stop) and from there it is a 5 km road walk to the waterfall. It departs every 1 hour and 10 minutes from Hualien Train Station. Bus 1139 departs every 50 minutes from Hualien Train Station and drops you off 1/2 km further down the road at Chinan bus stop.

The hike – There are two trails down to the river at the sharp bend in the road. The one slightly downhill was in a little better shape but both are slippery with rocks and slightly overgrown. You will also have to walk next to the river for 50 meters to get to the waterfall. It looks like a nice river trace upstream to find more hidden places.
